Overcome The Fear of Being Seen as a Stereotype With Lilian Hung | Elizabeth Yang Show E4

Overcome The Fear of Being Seen as a Stereotype With Lilian Hung | Elizabeth Yang Show E4

July 25, 20232 min read

When Lilian Hung started her bridal brand, Lyra Vega, she had a fear of being seen as a stereotype.

She didn’t want people to see her and think her gowns were, “cheap quality made in China.”

But Lilian eventually overcame this fear and ended up sharing this story on a stage at a Asian Women’s Networking event years ago — an event I was attending.

Her story made such an imprint on me, it’s what helped me define my mission of supporting diverse leaders so we can have the representation we need in the marketplace.

Lilian shares the fears she had around being seen when launching her brand, how she eventually worked through that and became visible in her work, and the results that came from doing so.

Her experience is here to illuminate a path forward if you too, doubt yourself, fear being stereotyped, or worry that people who have a different race or ethnicity from you won’t buy from you.

"Tradition is beautiful. And I think what my brand really is about is figure out what works for you and what doesn't, and be free to make those decisions. Don't be held back by the tradition or what other people tell you is important. Make those decisions for yourself."

In this Episode:

Lilian founded Lyra Vega Bridal in 2016, a direct to consumer bridal brand, created to revolutionize how brides shop for their wedding day. She leads and manages a global supply chain to support all aspects of the business, and the company has proudly maintained a return rate of under 10% in an industry where the average is 50%. She is focused on empowering women to make smart choices with their big day, rather than blindly following tradition.
